Managing broiler heat stress in Punjab summers

Dr. Sana Iqbal · Lead Veterinarian 22-Apr-2026 6 min read

Practical interventions our vet team prescribes when ambient temperatures cross 38°C — electrolytes, ventilation tweaks and water management.

From mid-May through August, broiler houses across central Punjab routinely exceed 38°C. Mortality from heat stress is one of the most preventable production losses on a commercial farm — and the answer isn't always a fan upgrade.

Start with water. Cool water (target 22°C) draws heat out of the bird faster than evaporative cooling alone. We recommend insulating overhead supply lines, flushing twice daily and dosing electrolytes during the hottest 6 hours.

Stocking density and ventilation interact: a tunnel-ventilated house at 22 birds/m² will outperform a cross-ventilated house at 18 birds/m² in the same weather. If you can't change the house, change the density.

Finally, feed timing matters. Shifting peak feed intake to early morning and late evening reduces metabolic heat at noon. Our farm-side vets can audit your specific setup — book a visit via WhatsApp.
